Week 2

What is Literature Review📝 :

It is a survey of literature such as books, articles, write-ups, and other sources that help you address the important issues, theories, and concepts relevant to your research area.

Question: How does Literature Review📝help us❓:

  • Examines sources relevant to your research area and aims to provide a critical evaluation and summary of them.

  • Analyses the information gathered by identifying gaps in current knowledge

  • Examples: Showing limitations of theories and points of view; formulating areas for further research and reviewing areas of controversy.

Why do we need to do Literature Review🤔❓:

Here are the importance of Literature Review:

(Figure 1: Bubble Map of summarizing the importance of Literature Review)

What makes a good literature review?:

In order to have a good literature review, here are the 5 main points we should consider:

1.The sources must be relevant and reliable

2.It must lay a strong foundation for your research topic

3.It should be narrow enough to eliminate irrelevant information.

4.It should be wide enough to cover enough information required on the subject

5.It should strike a balance between sources supporting and opposing a particular aspect or argument.

Week 2 Activity:

This week, we are tasked by Dr Noel to come up with ideas in order to solve a problem in our daily life. Because of that, we have to think of something that irritates us, make our life even easier and that can help ourselves, our friends and our family members.

We thought that brainstorming ideas is a 'Mission Impossible' for us but in the end, we managed to come out with several brilliant ideas. After brainstorming our ideas😤😤😤, we categorize our ideas in several category:

Electronic devices📱

Environmental-friendly(Save our environment)🌎

Technology🦾

.

  • Wireless earphone.

  • A watch that detects our body temperature.

  • Reusable tea bag

  • Seabin

  • Can and carton cleaner to make it easier to recycle(difficult to clean up dirty containers, people end up putting contaminated containers into the recycle bin which reduce the amount of recycling.)

  • Chemical that turns muddy water clear.

  • Gel pack with high thermal conductivity and specific heat to cool laptops. Can be quickly cooled with water

  • Self-lacing shoes.

  • Self-driving cars.

  • Digital cup that can maintain the temperature of the drink for a long day.

  • Portable dryer.

Household🏠

Food accessories🍙

  • Hydrophobic spray to keep clothes dry from rain.

  • Reusable drying agent.

  • Human mufflers

  • Dirt-resistance aerosol spray.

  • Device that can be attached to cartons to ease pouring and reduce dripping and splashes.

Our problem statement:

In a fast-paced lifestyle in Singapore, we may not have any extra time to do household chores, such as sweeping and moping our living room and the rooms as well. So, in order to complete these chores in a short amount of time and make sure the places are well-cleaned. So, how are we going to solve this problem?

So, we came up with…
- Portable Vacuum Cleaner❗❗❗

Results show that impellers with inclined blades deliver superior results in psychoacoustic metrics compared to impellers with upright blades.

5

1999

What causes the portable vacuum cleaner to produce loud noises while in use?

The blade rate tone of the vacuum working fan is found to be the most annoying source.

Reflection for Week 2:

Ambrose:
This week, we are tasked to do literature review. For me, the most difficult part was to come out with something that irritates us, make our life even easier and that can help ourselves, our friends and our family members but we managed to come out with several brilliant ideas. Besides that, we asked Dr Noel for help. After his precise explanations, I had a clear understanding of what we were doing.

Joshua: We were tasked with performing literature review for our problem statement and ideas for something that irritates us. I found it challenging to perform a review, because I did not know what sort of questions and things to search for. I was unsure of what sort things would be a relevant to our group ideas and how to search for them. With some consultation with Dr Noel,, we were able to realise how to use the problem statement as an overarching idea to guide our thinking to improve our ideation and determine what to use for our literature review.

Yongjie:

Edmund:
I have learnt about ideation and was tasked to complete a literature review as a team together. The hardest part for me was generating ideas for an object that can make my life easier because I thought that a task that's very hard to solve usually requires a very futuristic product. For example, when it rains I would usually think of something to stop the rain like a weather machine that can change the weather but I didn't realise that we can create a simpler product like an umbrella. Furthermore, there are other products that were created in the past to solve our problems but Dr Noel was very helpful in providing us ideas and showing us ideas online.
