This week, we have learned about Product Sketches & Design Specifications. 

1. What is Design Drawings❓❓❓:

1. Sketching or drawing is a key technique for creative expression in product design.

2. It is considered the principal approach through which product designers externalize a product’s design concepts.

3. Most importantly, sketches or drawings enhance understanding and provide visual clues for possible further refinements and revisions of the product.

2. Next up, what are design specifications❓❓❓

A specification is a set of documented requirements to be satisfied by a material, design, product, or service. It is a common preliminary part of any engineering design and product development process

Type of Specifications relevant to Product Design:

Material Specification

Physical (dimension, weight, voltage required etc 

Functional/Performance Specifications 

e.g. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 8 sec, 50m Water resistance 

Standard Specification 

e.g. API 650 for weld tank for oil storage; waterproof IP67 

Test Standard 

e.g. ASTM E18-20 Standard Test Methods for Rockwell Hardness of Metallic Materials

At the preliminary design stage, our focus will be only on Material & Functional/Performance Specifications.

Activity 2:

Our next task is to create a design specifications table for our group’s chemical product. Use the design specifications table template available on the next slide but make the necessary customization to suit your chemical product.
